Behind the Scenes of the Cosmetology State Board Exam: A Teacher’s View

The cosmetology state board exam isn’t just a big day for students — it’s a big day for instructors, too.

The day before always involves hours of packing student kits, double-checking supplies, and carefully walking through what goes in each bag. Every comb, clip, towel, and disinfectant has a purpose. There’s no guessing at state board — preparation is everything.

Each semester, we dedicate four full hours to a mock state board exam designed to mirror the real testing day as closely as possible. It’s long. It’s intense. And it’s incredibly valuable.

While students are working, my co-teacher and I carefully supervise the room, watching for proper safety, sanitation, and infection control procedures as they perform multiple services on their mannequins. These aren’t just technical skills — they’re professional habits that protect both the stylist and the client in this profession.

What people don’t always realize is just how much students are juggling at once. They aren’t just cutting or styling hair — they’re thinking about sanitation, tool safety, proper disinfection, body position, timing, and procedure every step of the way. State board isn’t just about skill; it’s about professionalism and responsibility.

And honestly?

Our students were total rock stars.

They showed up prepared, stayed focused, supported each other, and executed their services with confidence and professionalism. Seeing how far they have come this semester was genuinely one of the most rewarding parts of my day.

It isn’t easy for anyone in the room — and that’s what makes it so powerful. This isn’t just about passing an exam… seeing students rise to the challenge and step into their professional role is exactly why I love teaching.

I love what I do. ✂️✨
